Question 1 – Page 205
- Write your own explanation of how the “academic” and the “personal” interrelate. In what sense is your schoolwork personal, and in what sense do you bring your “personal” into your schoolwork? How does one shape the other?
Everyone understands and learns what is “academic” in their own way. They connect these things to their past experiences, both “personal” and “academic.” My schoolwork, especially for English classes, has to be personal. This is because every essay I have to write about is my own essay, and I have write these essays through research and my own minds. The way we think comes from past experiences, whether they be at school, or at our home environment. Everything that happens in our lives makes us who we are, and hones us into the people we are today. Our opinions of these past experiences shapes how we write about certain topics. Schoolwork is personal because we

I think these four things contributed to me actually reading and writing the most. First off, I joined book club in sophomore year of high school. We would usually get around six or seven books each year. I read most of them, unless I was really put off in the beginning of the book. I remember being really angry at the endings of a lot of them, but I also remember liking a few of the stories. I read more than normally due to book club. Next, I was in English 111/112 in junior year of high school for governor school. I loved the class and the teacher, but most of the readings weren’t the most interesting to me. We also had to write a lot of papers, but my teacher never really told us what she wanted out of the paper. She basically just gave us a prompt and we wrote about that prompt, and its relation to the topic and whatever story we were reading. She didn’t really grade too harshly on the content; I think she graded to just finish grading (she had 40 students and was teaching other classes at the same time). She focused on plagiarism, grammar, and if the essay made sense more than anything rather than the actual content of our essays. She graded very leniently. Furthermore, I also took Creative Writing with that same teacher. This class was just making poems and putting those poems in contests. I loved that class, because we could write anything we wanted to write about. She also really pushed me in that class, and I found it incredibly easy to pass in. It made me love writing poetry and I still write poetry when I’m bored because of that teacher and that class. Lastly, I was in the FCA. In this club, we would read the bible and talk about it for each meet.

ERH 101 has really helped me understand more of what a thesis should contain. Prior to this class, I knew what a thesis was, but I didn’t know or understand much of the details behind it. I tried to adjust to this class by giving more details to what I was writing about. I wasn’t really used to giving every detail and explaining every paragraph to both agree with my thesis. I usually would summarize in my writing rather than analyze. I still have a lot of trouble analyzing, because it’s just not something I’m used to. My previous classes were mostly just about writing and getting a grade. In this class, we have to give our extremely detailed take on whatever topic we’re attempting to argue. I find that to be difficult, because I hate trying to prove a point or to argue a topic. I’m not good with words, but this class has made me realize that I really need to start working on my writing, and overcoming my unassertive personality.
Things to remember:
For myself:
-To make sure I really detail and focus on explaining, expressing, and referring back to my argument/thesis.
-Analyze over summarizing
-Make sure that everything is organized and structured to make sense, and to flow well.
Paper 2 – 7/20/2016
My paper vs. sample papers
The sample paper is more narrow and gives more detailed explanations as to their thesis. They explain what the authors actually do.
