Southern Baroque Hospitaltiy

In the Southern Baroque era there were many memorable paintings and sculptures. I decided to go more in depth with to sculptures that i believe are amazing. Both are by an artist named Bernini and they are called Longinus and Cornaro chapel. The Longinus sculpture is very large made of four pieces of marble, the biggest Bernini has ever sculpted at this point. It is showing Longinus with his arms completely out in a dramatic gesture. Longinus just speared Jesus in the side during the crucifixion but shortly after he finds out Jesus is the son of God and is opening his arms to the divine light. The sculpture is showing realism, who see his hair is curly, chest out, you can see the tension in his right arm so you know he is gripping the spear tightly. You the see the armor his blow his feet basically saying he is done with it and ready for a new life.  Everything has a spiral look to it because the baroque style was implemented by movement and drama.

The other sculpture by Bernini is the Cornaro Chapel and it has a significant meaning behind it. Bernini wanted to expire faith when viewing this sculpture using color marble. This is actually the ecstasy of teresa which you see her face in joy, that is very pleasing. You see an angel pointing that arrow towards Teresa I’m guessing she stab her with it and gave Teresa that religious organsm and they seem floating in the air. He wanted the physical body and sexual symbolism to convey the spiritual experience. The light is bright above them maybe represents a someone in heaven shining on them. As you see both sculptures are are very similar due to the clothing which adds to the movement and drama of the scene, and the texture of the fabric contrasts with the purity of her face.
