  1. Uses anecdotes to explain his journey to this great realization of writing
    • receiving the crushing criticism from his friend
    • rewriting the paper and finally learning to embrace his own writing style
    • gives plenty of context into the writer’s situation
  2. “Thinks” on the page – writing is literally the progression of his own thoughts, like he is writing this in real time
    • hope and excitement about the new essay –> disappointment and anger over the criticism –> depression and despair as he wonders if he’ll ever write a good paper –> renewed excitement and joy as he is able to write a new draft –> satisfaction about his friend’s reaction
    • gives very helpful perspective – readers able to connect b/c many have felt the same feelings as a response to a long writing assignment
  3. Very wordy, tends to ramble about his thoughts and reactions
    • long sentences which contain information that helps him connect to college-aged readers
    • even mentions this in his writing! (p. 649)
