Prompt: What have you learned that you need to do for Paper 2 from Kantz’s essay? What have you learned about my expectations for you when using secondary sources? Be as concrete as possible.
I learned that I need to pay particular attention to the context in which the authors of my secondary sources are writing. Factors including political climate, history, and the prejudices and beliefs of the writer him/herself are critical to shaping that author’s point of view. As we saw with Shirley’s experience in writing her paper, she obtained completely different information from two separate sources; the conflict arose from the prejudices of the authors, whose nationalities were particularly disposed toward each other during the time period Shirley was writing about. This is a clear example of how I should not interpret any source material to be so black and white.
