Rhetoric
Rhetorical writing specifically tries to make an appeal to a person or a group about some argumentable topic of sorts in an attempt to change that person’s/group’s opinions on said topic. The 3 types of rhetorical appeals are:
1. Ethos: argument based on credibility of some expert or otherwise noteworthy person
Ex. “Dr. Smith says that eating an apple everyday adds an average of 10 years to the average human life span so you should eat an apple per day.”
2. Logos: argument based on logical reasoning
Ex. “Apples are rich in vitamins and minerals and it has been shown that greater consumption of these nutrients increase the human life span, so you should eat more apples.”
3. Pathos: argument based on emotion
Ex. “Think about how bad your family will feel if you die young because you didn’t eat enough apples!”
This is the definition I was taught my junior year in high school.
