For Writing and Discussion “Writing Arguments” Chapter 7

  1. I am against illegal immigration. I believe that people who don’t come in legally do not have a right to be here and should not be protected by the U.S. Constitution. To help slow the flow of illegal immigrants, I believe the US should remove birth right citizenship if the parents are illegal immigrants. This will remove one of the major motivations for illegal immigration (I do not intend for people who are current citizens due to birth right be deported however). Additionally, although the focus of deportation should be on dangerous illegal immigrants, I believe that if they entered illegally they are criminals and should be subject to the full force of the law, otherwise a precedence is set that not all laws need be followed.
  2. I believe the people in figure 7.4  agree with me, specifically there are signs stating that being an illegal immigrant is a crime. However, they aren’t clear exactly what actions they want to be taken. So we don’t know whether they believe that illegal immigration should be stopped, but without mass deportation or whether they desire the most harsh of anti-immigration legislation to be passed.
  3. Although I am anti-immigration, I understand where the pro-immigration protesters are coming from. For example, in reality many (if not most) people entering the country illegally have no negative intentions. They merely are trying to escape poverty and extreme danger in their home countries. I can understand this desire, and it certainly justifies their actions. In the end though, I believe the the rule of law trumps that and must be maintained as a priority over amnesty for these illegal immigrants.
