Career Perspective – Turner Construction Company

Written by Kevin Carson ’18

 What’s your major?

After much debate my senior year of high school I decided to go to VMI to pursue a Civil Engineering degree. Once I got here I loved working with the teachers and my fellow classmates. I’m on track to graduate as a Civil Engineer in May.

What is the title for your new position? Where will you be working (location)?

The title of my position at Turner Construction is as a Field Engineer. I will be responsible for overlooking and reviewing work done by contractors. I will be working somewhere in the DC area. I will not know which job site I go too until a week before my start data in August.

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I learned of this opportunity though the Career Services at VMI. One thing lead to another and ended up going through 2 rounds of interviews at Turner and really liking the people I met. The next thing I knew, I was calling to confirm my offer to work with them.

Where can cadets go to learn more about this opportunity?

Future cadets can go to the link listed below. Turner has great information about interviewing. Even if you don’t know if you’re interested, I suggest you take a look at their website: http://www.turnerconstruction.com/careers

What can cadets expect in the hiring process?

I don’t want to give too much away. However, the hiring process is really easy going. Expect people to ask you a ton of questions. The interviews are like having a conversation, you don’t get drilled into the ground like in some interviews. Right before you leave, they take you to a construction site and show you around. I went to the new soccer field that they are building in DC for pro-soccer. It is a great experience.

What advice would you give to cadets about researching this company?

It important to understand what the company does and their community outreach. Turner does a ton with the local communities and is a big part of who they are. Also, at the social meeting and interview try to be relate and ask a lot of questions. Be a part of the conversation but into your thoughts into the conversation, do not be just a body.
