Although summer furlough is still 5 months away, it’s never too early to start thinking about what to spend your summer furlough doing. In preparation for summer there are some things that you should consider doing over winter furlough. 1) Look over and update your resume. 2) Look into some informational interviews. 3) Shadow someone or volunteer in order to gain some experience.
- Look over and update your resume.
Now that the fall semester has come to a close, there are things that you might want to add to your resume that weren’t there before. You might even want to add to the descriptions of your leadership roles now that you have a better understanding of what it is that those roles entail.
2. Explore networking through informational interviewing.
Take time out to connect with professionals in your field of interest. Consider completing one or more informational interviews. Informational interviews are business meetings where you are the interviewer and the professional you are meeting is being interviewed by you.
3. Seek out volunteering, shadowing, or other short-term experiences.
Experience, everyone wants someone with experience. If you have experience you are more likely to get the internship or the job. So, find someone that would be willing to let you shadow them, even if it’s just a few hours over the break, or find somewhere that you can volunteer in the field you are interested in.
Use your time over break wisely, next thing you know, you’ll be swamped with school work and won’t have time for anything extra. Summer is just around the corner don’t wait too long.
