Prompt 3 – Steinberg
The manner in which Steinberg chooses to open her work is quite interesting and works well to introduce and further her article’s point. She chose to open her work thematically as if it were the book of Genesis out of the Christian Bible. This technique works well to establish that Barbie and the things that she represents are essentially worshiped by those around the world and especially in North America. This style of opening establishes well what society thinks is right and what is valued and what is clearly secondary and set to the side by certain groups of people. It establishes all of the perceived stereotypes and shows how Barbie fills those stereotypes and even, to be politically or socially correct, breaks those stereotypes, but with style and still holding on to her core feminine and stereotypical values and aspects such as the pink on everything. The introduction shows that Barbie has permeated cultures all around the world and molds (just like the Bible) so many people, girls especially, to her ideals of what things should be like. In additions to this, the introduction touches on many of the central issues that are focused on today such as race, sexual orientation, sexuality in general, and the like. The introduction, at face value, does a decent job of establishing the physical history of Barbie as well.
