Prompt 1 – Harney & Frost
Both authors, Harney and Frost, depict what most people consider the major stereotypes for what the Appalachian people are like. Within these stereotypes played on are the presumed level of education of the people of the region, usually presumed to be low, as well as the very well known aspect of how the Appalachian people speak. These can be problematic descriptions of the region and it’s people, no doubt. There are people that fit this bill and there are a number of them, but not everyone is uneducated and speaks like “yeou cayn’t help a havin'” as in the Frost reading on page 314. This set of depictions has plagued Appalachia for a very long time and does not speak for the entire region. There is no arguing however that the poorer regions where there is a lack of education and similar amenities do hold a lot of these assertions of how the people of Appalachia speak and act. Though these aspects of the authors’ assertions are slightly problematic, there are some aspects that they happened to get spot on and that includes the uniqueness of the regions culture in general. The authors talk about things such as the will of the mountain people on page 319 of the Frost reading and similar aspects of will in the Harney reading.
