FILM REFLECTION: PORNLAND (ESSAY)
The Porn industry dominates a large portion of the culture in the United States and the world today. It has influenced ways we as people see sexuality and created new visions of what ‘sexy’ itself is, even if it is wrong or perverse of what sex or sexuality should be. In a time not so long ago, Hustler, Playboy, and others were the standard for pornographic images. Playboy invoked a playfulness and a sense of sexual play that was arousing in a more classy sense, but as time has gone on and the advent of the internet porn industry has reared its head the views on sexuality and its contents have evolved drastically. In some aspects good, and in others very negatively, the world of porn and sexuality has changed.
The world of sexuality portrayed in porn as discussed in the documentary Pornland describes a morphed view of sexuality that porn has created that can be potentially very dangerous and harmful in more than just one way. It holds women and men to gender stereotypes and expectations that are more often than not very negative. I do agree with some of the statements made in the film and intend to expound them; however, that being said… I do discredit some of the film as being heavily one sided and focused on only one or two of hundreds of options. Again, the film does make some valid points. The most important of which, I feel, is the negative image that some of porn puts on women as purely sexual objects for domination and pleasure. The film is correct in asserting that these images create a purely negative example of how women are to be treated and this is having an impact on our society when it is some of the first sexual things that our youth sees when they search for sex on the internet. This severe sexist culture is heavily degrading and it has a strong possibility to create a culture of violence and even rape. These forms of pornography are dangerous and damaging to women and they should not be as prevalent as they are or at least not the first thing that pops up on a google search (realizing that some people are into that kind of thing). Where the film fails is that there are countless other forms of pornography that are very equal to both men and women and some that are even woman dominant. There is romantic porn, etc… there are as many types of porn as one can think of. RULE #34 of the internet… If it exists, there is porn for it. Here is a Wikipedia link to give just a taste of what is out there –> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pornographic_subgenres. It is this variety of pornography that can potentially break the more negative stereotypes. Not everyone, unlike how the film views the issue, looks up extreme hardcore rough sex and complete violence. I and I am sure many other men do not find that attractive in any way. There is nothing wrong with being mutually a little rough and playful, but torture should not be considered alright. I find it more attractive and arousing when a woman makes the choice to do stuff and is not held down and abused. I am sure there are plenty of others who agree with that sentiment. It is kind of narrow to focus on only those few things that were subject in the film, but again, the ones that were elaborated on do have negative effects. Another point the film made that is really just part of the negative image is the aspect of expectations put on what a woman’s image should be and such. This can include hair on the body, facial features, body shape, breasts, even the way the vagina on a woman looks. There are some women that this is a major point of concern for and they think that there might be something wrong with them when there really is not.
Porn holds many people to gender stereotypes of what they think that they should look like and act like and how they believe they can treat each other , etc., etc. as can be seen in the discussion above, and though men are effected, I feel like it effects women more negatively at this point than it does men and this is what is important. Women are held to certain stereotypes with stricter views on how they should be than men are and this has many impacts on them in society. Every which way a woman turns in today’s society, there is something else telling them to wear this or look like that or act this way, etc. There is tremendous societal pressure placed on women in this day in age. It is important that this does not escalate any further than it has already. It is not healthy or good for society, men or women.
